What is Ethology?

What is Ethology?

Clinical Ethology is a veterinary area of specialization concerned with the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of behavioral problems in pets.
Ethology Consultation

What does it consist of?

The first step isto distinguish between a behavioral problem and an educational problem. Behavioral problems can be seen as pathological disorders which in many cases should befollowed up with veterinary tests, pharmacological tests and behavior modification, while educational problems are usually solved through routines and dog education sessions.

Reaching a diagnosis

What is the procedure?

The client comes to the ethology center with a prior appointment –through a phone call, email or online calendar –or, if necessary, our ethologist can travel to the client’s home. The consultation willbe focused on diagnosing the behavioral problem; in other words, naming a cause of the problem in your animal in order to carry out the appropriate treatment going forward. The Ethology consultation must in many cases be complemented by veterinary tests in order toreach a definite diagnosis. Once the behavioral problem is diagnosed, a process of behavior modification begins, which ispersonalized to each case and has the relevant prognosis.

Behavioral problems in cats

For cats, the most common behavioral problems are improper excretion and aggressiveness.

Behavioral problems in dogs

Ethology consultations require time, and a first visit can take between one to two hours for complex cases.

The most frequent behavioral problems vary from speciesto species. For dogs, the key ones are aggressiveness, fears and phobias, improper excretion and destructive behavior.
Several types can be distinguished:

  • Aggressiveness towards people (family and/or strangers).
  • Aggressiveness towards dogs.
  • Lack of control: anxious or hyperactive dogs
  • jumping and biting…
  • Hygiene problems: dogs who do their business where they should not.
  • Disorders related to separation from the owner: destructiveness – excessive barking – improper excretion (for those owners who find that the dog has done his business in the house upon their arrival).
  • Ingestion of non-edible objects.
  • Problems with fears and phobias: of noises – fireworks – storms…
  • Compulsive behavior: excessive licking – self-harming – repetitive behavior.

How can Ethology help an animal and its owners?

Itwill improve the bond and understanding between the two and will help them get on better.
It should be noted that many behavioral problems cannot be solved, but only managed. We can improve the problem greatly, but in some cases with will never be able to fully eradicate the problem, but rather learn to manage it and improve the animal’s ability to live together with its owner.
The improvement of a behavioral problem depends on three factors:

The Dog

We cannot change the temperament (character) of a dog. We can modify behavior, but not their character.

The Owner

Commitment is very important. Wewillbe with your dog for only a few hours. The owner isultimately responsible for applying routines, treatments, etc., as they are the ones living with their pet.

The Environment

In some cases, even if the owner is committed, the situation in which the pet lives hinders their improvement. For example, a two year-old rescue dog who has lived its entire life in a rural area and has now been adopted by a family living in the center of Barcelona, will find it very difficult toovercome its fears in such a complicated situation, no matter how much treatment is carried out and no matter how motivated the owner is.
